Windermere Car Ferry

The ferry has been operating for over 500 years, originally the ferry was rowed across the lake, then came steam power and currently a diesel engine is used to power the craft. Heavy chains are used to guide the craft safely across the fairly busy stretch of water.

Location

The car ferry is situated at ferry nab in Bowness on Windermere and links across Lake Windermere to Far Sawrey which is on the Western shores of the lake, providing easy access to Hawkshead.

Capacity

The current ferry, The Mallard, can take upto 18 cars and approximatley 100 passengers with the crossing taking only 10 minutes saving a long drive through busy country roads.

Schedule

The ferry operates every 30 minutes starting at 06:50 from Bowness and 07:00 from Ferry House on the western side with the last trip at 20:50 from Bowness and 21:00 from Ferry House during weekdays and Saturdays, Sunday times are 08:50 and 09:00 with the last trips at 20:50 from Ferry Nab and 21:00 from Ferry House.

Weather

The ferry can sometimes close during high winds or storms, there are signs on all approaches informing you before you arrive.

Cars, vans and small delivery vehicles are permitted as are motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians.
