William Creighton Mineral Museum

The William Creighton Mineral Museum, which is in Cockermouth, houses over 200 minerals, all of which are from the North of England, with over 100 miner’s lamps and tools. Mineral mining in Lakeland and Northern England dates back to Roman times.

William Creighton, who is an ex-stone carver, said his calcite lump from the Florence mine, which is 12 inches across, is world class. However, the most amazing thing for amateurs and children to do is to go into his fluorescent room and see the rocks light up.
