Ulverston
Ulverston, a historical market town, was awarded a Market Charter in 1280 by Edward I – this event is celebrated with the Charter Fortnight Festival, which is held annually during the first two weeks in September. Ulverston has two street markets and these are held every Thursday and Saturday.
Ulverston’s canal, which was built in 1796 and is approximately three quarters of a mile from the town centre, is about one mile long and apparently the deepest and widest in England. The construction of this canal was funded by the local businessmen who wanted to transport goods from Morecambe Bay to the town centre as well as to export goods worldwide this included the locally produced Ulverston Check cotton. Sadly this canal was closed around the 1940s. Although Ulverston has had many famous residents, the most well known would have to be Stan Laurel from Laurel and Hardy, the comic genius who was born in Ulverston in 1890.
