Troutbeck
The picturesque village of Troutbeck, which is between Windermere and Ambleside, is made up of the hamlets Town End, Longmire Yeat, High Green and Townhead. These are strung out along a line of springs along the lower slopes of Wansfell.
Troutbeck has many interesting old houses and farms, which are a good example of the Lake District’s vernacular architecture. A good example of this is Townhead, which was built in 1626 by George Browne. The National Trust, who are responsible for it’s upkeep and preservation since 1947, open this house on summer afternoons for public viewing. Townend is well worth the visit as it has remained exactly as it would have been lived in many years ago. This house has no electricity, many of the walls are covered with carved wood panelling and all the original wooden furniture, which the Browne family collected over the years, are on display. The outside garden is laid out exactly as it was in the 19th Century.
Do not get this Troutbeck muddled with another Lakeland Troutbeck, which is just off the A66 near Threlkeld between Keswick and Penrith.
