Torver near Coniston
Slate and stone mining increased in 1859 when the Coniston branch of the Furness Railway was opened. However, this was sadly closed in 1958. Farming in Torver has always played an important part in it’s history, and interestingly at one stage there were more Herdwick sheep in Torver than people. Torver today, however, is a popular starting point with walkers for walks around the Duddon Valley and for walks around Coniston Water.
