Threlkeld, which is a small village in the Lakes which is located under the shadow of Blencathra and east of Keswick, was originally a farming, mining and quarrying settlement. However, a tuberculosis sanatorium, called Blencathra Hospital, was built on the slopes above the village in the late 19th century.

This, however, was converted to a residential centre called Blencathra Field Centre which provides residential and day courses in biology and geography. For walkers wanting to explore the fell country between Skiddaw and Blencathra, there is a small area just past the centre’s entrance in which you will find parking.
The former Threlkeld Quarry, which lies off the B5322 to the south of the A66, is now a museum called Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum. Here you will find a pictorial history of the quarry, a large collection of plans, maps, tools and mineral and geological specimens relating to the site and mines of the Cumbrian fells.
