Steeple

Steeple, with an elevation of 819 metres, is a fell in the Lake District, Cumbria located in the mountainous area between Ennerdale and Wasdale. This fell, which is really just the rocky northern projection of Scoat Fell, has earned the reputation of being a separate fell because of it’s pronounced peak and steep crags.

Steeple and it’s name were graded very highly by Alfred Wainwright, a guidebook author, British hillwalker and illustrator, who said “Seen on a map, it commands the eye and quickens the pulse, seen in reality it does the same.”

This fell, which was robbed of being one of the best fells in the area because of it’s closeness to Scoat Fell, can be climbed from either Wasdale or Ennerdale. However, it is normally climbed together with nearby fells like Scoat Fell, Pillar and Red Pike as part of the Mosedale Horseshoe walk.

Unfortunately, the summit of Steeple, which hardly has space for a cairn, only has room for a few people to stand at the highest point. Therefore during the summer months there could be a queue to stand at the highest point. However, although the view to the south and east is limited by higher fells, the view of Ennerdale Water is spectacular.
