This small holiday resort, which developed in the 1860’s around the terminus of a railway from Carlisle which had begun construction in 1855, enabled workers from the factories in Carlisle, for the first time, affordable access to the seaside. This town flourished as it became a very popular destination for day trippers. However, after the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this seaside resort slipped into disrepair.

Fortunately, in recent years many sea facing properties have received facelifts and there have been many improvements. There are many various events and activities which are held throughout the year on a large expansive green within the town. Christ Church, which overlooks the Green, is Silloth’s largest church and a feature of the town. This church is one of many different denominational places of worship within the town.

Visitors are offered many good facilities, these include a number of guest houses, hotels and holiday parks which offer varied accommodation as well as clubs, cafes and other entertainment which caters for different tastes.
