The ridge walk from Red Pike to Haystacks is thought to be the best in the area, with spectacular views of the Scafells, Pillar and Great Gable. However, the direct ascent of Red Pike from Buttermere is very popular with fellwalkers.
This Red Pike should not be confused with the Red Pike in Wasdale, which is a mere three miles away, but cannot be seen from the summit. Alfred Wainwright, author of The Western Fells guidebook, suggests that the Wasdale Red Pike, although higher in elevation, is less suited to the name as Red Pike in Buttermere as it gets it’s rich red colouring from the presence of syenite in the rock and subsoil of the fell. The summit of Red Pike, which is shear on three sides, but which is well grassed and has a large cairn, is unusual in the amount of lakes which can be viewed from here. Loweswater, Ennerdale Water, Crummock Water, Buttermere and Derwentwater are all clearly visible from this summit.
