Museums and Galleries

Introduction

The Lake District is not only well known for it’s mountains and lakes on which to sail, climb, scramble or hike, but it is also well known for it’s museums and galleries. Many museums started as a result of one person’s passion or devotion – e.g. The Senhouse Roman Museum, Maryport Maritime Museum, Laurel and Hardy Museum and the Windermere Steamboat Museum. While others are traditional municipal collections. The more modern and commercial ones offer audio visual displays and gift shopping – e.g. The Beacon and The World of Beatrix Potter Exhibition.

Whilst every effort has been made to ensure that all the Museums and Galleries information is correct, it is recommended that you directly contact either the museum or gallery that you are interested in, or the Tourist Information Centre in that area, for further information on seasonal opening times.
