This village together with it’s twin Kings Meaburn, which lies to the north of the valley, were part of a former medieval manor called Meaburn or Medburn (meaning meadow stream) and were owned by a brother and sister, Hugh and Maud de Morville. However, when Hugh became one of those responsible for the murder of Thomas a Becket, his portion was forfeited to the Crown. Therefore Kings Meaburn was distinguished from Maud’s or Maulds.
Maulds Meaburn passed from the de Veteripont family, Maud married William de Veteripont, to the families of Frauncey and Vernon. Later, during the reign of James I, it was sold to Sir John Lowther and is now owned by his descendant, the present Earl of Lonsdale.
