Lingmoor Fell
Lingmoor Fell, which is a fell with an elevation of approximately 469 metres in the Lake District, is approximately eight kilometres west of Ambleside. This fell divides the valleys of Great Langdale and Little Langdale. According to Ordnance Survey maps the actual summit of the fell is called Brown How.
Lingmoor Fell’s north eastern slopes, which are above the villages of Chapel Stile and Elterwater have been quarried for a long time for it’s high quality Westmorland green slate. The Burlington quarry at Elterwater, which produces approximately over 800 tones of slate annually, has been worked for over 300 years and is still in production today. Many of these quarries have closed over the years, however, the crags are now used by rock climbers.
Lingmoor Fell can be climbed from Elterwater in Great Langdale, however, in the early stages this route can become confusing as there are many paths through the lower woodland and quarries, but once the open fell is reached the route becomes clearer. Alternatively, there is a route from the Blea Tarn car park in Little Langdale which makes use of an old quarry track for most of the way.
Lingmoor Fell’s summit has spectacular views of the Langdale Pikes and all of the high fells around the head of Great Langdale, as well as having wonderful views of the Coniston Fells to the south west.
