Kendal
Previously called Kirbie Kendal (meaning, village with a church in the valley of the River Kent), is an ancient market town which lies on the banks of the river Kent and is approximately nine miles from Windermere. Kendal’s motto is Wool is my bread, this was due to it being a thriving centre for the wool trade in the fourteenth century.
The Kendal Green cloth was apparently worn by the Kendalian archers, who were part of the English victory over the French at the Battle of Agincourt. The centre of Kendal was structured around the high street with yards on either side, this was to allow the local population to seek refuge from the Anglo-Scottish raiding parties who were known as the Border Reivers. In Kendal you will find many Victorian and Georgian buildings.
Today, however, Kendal’s prosperity comes from shoemaking, engineering and insurance as well as administrative offices for local government and the Lake District National Park. Mint cake is the distinctive local product. Kendal has two castles, Sizergh Castle and Kendal Castle, two museums, Kendal Museum & Museum of Lakeland Life a number of shopping arcades, many historical buildings and bridges, good restaurants and accommodation as well as many public houses.
