The Ullswater steamers regularly stop at Howtown on their way from Glenridding to Pooley Bridge and vice a versa.

This village consists of a hotel, a few houses, an outdoor education centre and a mountain rescue post. There are many walks to choose from, however, the most popular walk which offers superb scenery is from Howtown to Glenridding. This can be done by hopping on a boat at Glenridding, getting off at Howtown and walking back to Glenridding.
