Helvellyn
Helvellyn, at 3118 feet, is considered to be the finest mountain by Lakeland experts as it has breathtaking views and an exciting summit. This is the third highest mountain in The Lakes. It is said that this is the most dangerous as it has had more accidents than any other Lakeland mountain. However, William Wordsworth climbed Helvellyn safely at the age of seventy!
Helvellyn’s peak is highest on the north south ridge, which is between Thirlmere valley to the west and Patterdale to the east. The best route up Helvellyn is from Glenridding car park. Near the top of Helvellyn is a small monument commemorating the landing of an aeroplane on the summit of Helvellyn in 1926. The two pilots, which were from Lancashire, decided they needed proof of their landing and asked the first person they saw to take their photograph. This person turned out to be a professor from Birmingham University. After he took their photograph they taxied down a slope and just in time, before going over the edge, they got airborn.
