Glenridding
History
This village, which was formerly a small lead mining village, lies at the foot of the Kirkstone Pass. In the 1650s lead ore was discovered and mined from the 1690s until 1962. Glenridding and it’s surrounding area would not have existed without this mine. This mine, which was the largest lead mine in the Lake District, was situated above the village at Greenside. Not only is it popular for watersports such as windsurfers, canoes and dinghies, but it is also a popular starting point for fell walkers who want to climb Helvellyn, which is England’s third highest mountain, along Striding Edge.
In 1859 the Ullswater Navigation and Transit Company Limited started their steamer services by carrying passengers, mail and provisions around Ullswater. Today Ullswater steamers still operate by carrying passengers around this lake. In fact, you can purchase a combined ticket for bus and steamer boat service along the lake. However, it would be advisable to obtain further information about this from the Ullswater Information Centre. Glenridding and it’s surrounding area was used to film the popular TV series “The Lakes”.
