Eskdale
Eskdale, which is one of the few major valleys in the Lake District which does not have it’s own lake, is situated on the western fringe of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria. However, there are several tarns situated above the valley sides. The Esk River flows through the valley to it’s estuary at Ravenglass.
A popular tourist attraction, The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, runs through this valley. Another popular tourist attraction, which is south west of Eskdale, is Muncaster Castle.
Access to this valley is from the western end, however, there is also a steep road leading out of the valley to the east over Hardknott Pass. There is also a road, with spectacular views, which leads southwards over Birker Fell to the village of Ulpha in the Duddon Valley.
This valley, which is quieter during the summer months than the more accessible eastern areas, offers splendid walking from the wilds of the upper valley to the coast at Ravenglass.
