Elterwater means Swan Lake with Elter being the Norse word for swan. Being the smallest of the sixteen lakes, being only half a mile long, it is sometimes forgotten and Brothers Water often gets included in the list instead. It is situated at the entrance to the most scenic valleys of the Lake District – Great Langdale. It is also surrounded by forest and Moorland with outstanding views of the Langdale Pikes. Just to the north of the Langdale valley you will find the slightly larger village of Chapel Stile.

Elterwater is also a very popular haven for a large variety of bird life, especially the swans. The Brathay River, which provides the outflow from Elterwater, flows south to join Lake Windermere, near Ambleside.
