Egremont, which is a traditional market town with a long historical and industrial heritage in Cumbria, is located on the A595 road south of Whitehaven and on the River Ehen. This town, which lies at the foot of Uldale Valley and Dent Fell, has a layout today which is much the same as it was imagined by Richard de Lucy in c.1200. It is similar to Cockermouth, having a wide main street, which opens out into the market place, and is overlooked at one end by a ruined Norman castle – to which there is free access at all time.
