The Cumberland Pencil Company

The Cumberland Pencil Company, which is situated in Keswick, became the UK’s first pencil factory in 1832. It has had many owners during it’s 175 year history, however, it became the Cumberland Pencil Company in 1916.
In 1930 the Lakeland children’s range was launched, and in 1938 this was followed by the Derwent brand. However, a huge variety of artist’s materials have since then been developed, they range from the traditional to highly innovative. The Cumberland Pencil Museum, which is open 362 days a year, charts the history of pencil making and you can see how Derwent Fine Art Pencils are made today. This is an attraction for the whole family to enjoy.
