It’s name from the Celtic for a crooked or bent lake. This lake, as it’s name suggests, is curved and measures two and a half miles long, three quarters of a mile wide and approximately one hundred and forty four feet deep. This lake is located between Loweswater in the north, Buttermere to the south with the hill of Mellbreak running the full length of the lake on the western side. The River Cocker flows from the north end of the lake to the town of Cockermouth. The highest waterfall in the Lake District, namely Scale Force – which has a drop of one hundred and seventy foot, feeds this lake.

Crummock Water and Buttermere are thought to have been one larger lake, but now they are separated by a narrow half mile strip of land. Although this lake is bigger than Buttermere it is, however, nowhere near as busy. For some excellent views up the valley, follow the footpath along the western shore going from Buttermere village to Loweswater. The National Trust owns Crummock Water.
