The Old Man of Coniston
Coniston Old Man, the Old Man of Coniston or The Old Man as it is sometimes called is approximately 2634 feet high and lies to the west of Coniston village and Coniston Water. Not only is it the highest point in the Furness Fells in the Lake District, but it is also the twelfth most highest peak in England.
The panoramic view from the summit of Coniston Old Man, on a clear day, is magnificent and much of the Southern Lakes, the Lancashire coast, Morecambe Bay and the Isle of Man can be seen and to the North, the Tilberthwaite Fells.
Also on the summit are three heaps of stone, these are known as the Old Man, his wife and son.
However, if you are more interested in ancient history, The Ruskin Museum in Coniston explains Coniston’s history of copper mining and slate quarrying, which began in the late 1590’s and was revived again in the 19th century.
These copper mines can still be seen just outside the village.
