Black Combe
Black Combe, which has an elevation of 600 metres, is a fell situated in the far south of the Lake District. The view from the summit of this fell, as it stands in solitude approximately 10 miles from any higher ground, provides a spectacular panoramic view of both land and sea. From here the Scafell group, the Coniston group and the Yorkshire Dales can clearly be seen.
However, on a clear day this panoramic view extends to the Isle of Man and Snowdonia which is approximately 85 miles to the south.
This fell is usually climbed from St Mary’s church, Whicham to the south, St Mary’s church, Whitbeck to the west or from the Fell road which crosses the fell at an altitude of approximately 1250 feet four miles to the north of the top.
Swinside Stone Circle, which lies below the northern shoulder of Black Combe, can be viewed from the Duddon Bridge to Corney Fell road. This stone circle is approximately the same size as the Castlerigg Stone Circle.
