The Fairfield horseshoe ridge walk either starts or ends with Nab Scar – depending on which direction of travel you choose. This route also includes Heron Pike, Great Rigg, Fairfield, Hart Crag, Dove Crag, High Pike and Low Pike in a circuit of Rydale.
Ascents up Nab Scar can be made up the recently repaired path up the ridge from Rydal village, or alternatively, from White Moss car park which climbs up Dunney Beck towards Alcock Tarn and which then swings east onto the ridge. The summit of Nab Scar, which is marked by a large cairn, has spectacular views westwards. Although Alfred Wainwright gave Nab Scar the status of a separate fell, it is actually the steep terminal face of the southern ridge of Heron Pike. However, the name is also given to the whole ridge south of Lord Crag.
