Lakes Aquarium

The Aquarium of the Lakes

Lakes Aquarium, which is located at the southern end of Lake Windermere in Lakeside, is Britain’s award winning freshwater aquarium. Although it is away from the tourist hot spots, Windermere Lake Cruises provide steamers and cruises that arrive from the popular towns of Bowness on Windermere and Ambleside, or alternatively, you can hop on a gentle steam train at Haverthwaite station which will bring you to Lakeside station. Combination tickets are available for entry to the Lakes Aquarium together with these cruises/train journey.

At the Lakes Aquarium, which was originally called Aquarium of the Lakes, you can follow the life of a Lake District river which starts as a raindrop in the mountains and flows down to the sea in Morecambe Bay. You can also see how this affects the flora and fauna along the way. There is also an impressive underwater tunnel from which you will be able to see various types of fish and occasionally ducks that dive to the bottom to feed.

There is also a restaurant that caters for the whole family. This is a popular activity for families visiting the Lake District.
