There is a huge cairn on the summit of this fell, which used to be a shepherd’s cottage that became a ruin. A considerable wind shelter has also been built from this ruined cottage. A trip point, which has been mounted with a plaque, reads “To Celebrate Caldbeck Parish’s Millennium Celebrations”.
The summit of High Pike has an unusual fixture, a slate bench, which bears the inscription “In memory of Mick Lewis who loved these fells”. He apparently died in 1944 at the age of 16, there is also a small addition in memory of his mother who died in 1970. Although many minerals have been extracted from High Pike since the 16th century, the last mine closed in 1966.
This fell, which is normally climbed together with the fells of Carrock Fell, Knott and Great Calva, creates a circular walk which starts and ends near Mosedale to the south of Carrock Fell. However, a direct ascent can be made from the north, which starts around the Caldbeck area. Although the view north from the summit of the Solway Firth and the Scottish Border hills is wonderful, the view south is hindered by the massiveness of Skiddaw and Blencathra.
