High Crag, which has an elevation of 744 metres, stands at the southern end of the High Stile ridge. This divides the valleys of Ennerdale and Buttermere in the west of The Lakes. High Crag is often climbed as part of this popular ridge walk, either from Buttermere by way of Scarth Gap or from Black Sail youth hostel. The views of the Great Gable and the Scafells are spectacular.

The Western Fells, which occupy a triangular section of the Lake District, is bordered by the River Cocker to the northeast and Wasdale to the south east. However, westwards the hills appear to taper off towards the coastal plain of Cumberland. Great Gable and it’s satellites are at the central hub of the high country, while two principal ridges fan out on either flank of Ennerdale. The western fells forms a great horseshoe around this long wild valley. Buttermere fells, High Crag, High Stile and Red Pike forms the highest section of the northern branch.
High Crag, which has a triangular summit, has a cairn at the high point above Gamlin End. The view is restricted by High Stile, however, the head of Ennerdale, which is backed by the Scafells, offers a spectacular view. Skiddaw and the Helvellyn range are also visible in the distance. However,a short walk northwest to the top of the crags, brings the lakes of Buttermere and Crummock Water into view.
