Haverthwaite Steam Railway
The Haverthwaite Steam Railway, which was originally built in 1846, was part of the Furness Railway line which was built not only to carry passengers, but also to carry iron ore and slate from the Cumbrian mines to the sea port at Barrow in Furness and Roa Island.
Unfortunately, the rail line through Ulverston to the coast was closed due to the “Beeching cuts”. However, the railway line from the village of Haverthwaite to the southern end of Lake Windermere remained.
It is also possible to enjoy a combination of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway together with the Windermere Lake Cruises, who operates three of the former railway steamer vessels, which connect with the railway line at the Lakeside terminus, the Lakeside station is right next to the Aquarium of the Lakes. If you arrive early at the Haverthwaite yard you can watch the engine operating crew stoke and light the fire and clean and polish the engine before the day begins. There is a full service Station Restaurant at Haverthwaite station. This is a popular activity for the whole family in the Lake District.
