Haig Colliery Mining Museum

The Haig Colliery Mining Museum, which is in Whitehaven, is a totally independent volunteer organisation which was set up in late 1993 after taking over ownership of the Haig (which shut in 1986), buying the property from British Coal for £1. The aim of this independent volunteer group was to restore the building to it’s original glory along with the two unique Bever Dorling steam winding engines and open a visitor attraction to keep the memory of local mining alive. They also wanted to provide an interesting and educational trip for local school children.

This is the perfect place to find out about Whitehaven’s long mining history.
