Grasmere Lake

By Ian GrattonGrasmere Lake

Measuring one mile in length, half a mile in width and approximately seventy five feet deep, is a small lake located alongside Grasmere village. This lake is joined to Rydal Water by the Rothay River and lies in the vale of Rothay. It is possible to canoe from this lake through Rydal Water down to Waterhead.

Grasmere Lake is very popular in summer months as it has a ‘beach’ at the foot of the lake under Loughrigg Terrace. It gets quite crowded with hikers, picnicing families and dog owners. On the south west shore, in front of the refreshment kiosk, you can hire a boat seven days a week between March and early November. The island on Grasmere Lake is now owned by the National Trust.
