Dove Crag
Dove Crag, which has an elevation of 792 metres, is a fell situated in the Eastern Fells of The Lakes, Cumbria. This fell is approximately seven kilometres south south-west of Glenridding and is normally climbed as part of the Fairfield horseshoe walk. However, to show the fell’s full potential which displays the striking crags just to the north east of the summit, a direct climb from Patterdale is required. The climb from Patterdale begins from the car park at Brothers Water and follows the route to Hartsop Hall.
The Fairfield Group of fells lies between Grasmere and the Kirkstone Pass. Apparently, the crag, which is approximately 75 metres high at it’s highest point, is a popular venue for rock climbers. Often used by walkers and climbers as a rough overnight camp is a cave called the “Priest’s Hole”. This is hidden within the crags and is approximately five metres deep with extra protection provided by a wall built in front. This rough overnight camp, which is well used and stocked, is not easy to find in bad conditions. However, it is marked on the large scale Ordnance Survey maps, although this is only of limited use.
The summit, which is marked with a cairn, is a small rock platform. A dry stone wall, which crosses the summit fifteen metres to the west, runs north to south to the connecting fells of High Pike to the south and Hart Crag to the north. However, the highlight of this summit’s view is achieved by walking to the edge of the crags and looking down into Dovedale.
