Cockermouth, which is on the northwest edge of the Lake District, is steeped in history. It is probably best known as the birthplace of William and Dorothy Wordsworth. Their home, Wordsworth House, which has been restored and is now owned by the National Trust, is open to visitors. However, this town also has Roman, Viking and Norman roots, all of which have left their mark on this town. Here you will find that the architectural core of the town has remained virtually unchanged since the 18th and 19th centuries.

One of the other main attractions of Cockermouth is it’s Norman castle, Cockermouth Castle, which is partly ruined but is still inhabited by Lady Egremont. This castle, however, is only open to the public once a year during the annual Town festival.
