Workington

Workington lies in the borough of Allerdale, is on the west coast of Cumbria and at the mouth of the River Derwent. This ancient market and industrial town dates back to Roman times.

Workington grew to become a major industrial town and port in the 18th century due to the exploitation of the local iron ore and coal pits. Workington is where the famous Henry Bessemer first introduced his revolutionary steel making process. However, the town has had to diversify into other forms of industry due to the decline of the steel industry and coal mining. Unfortunately the steel making finally ended in August 2006.

Miss Helena Thompson, a local philanthropist, left The Helena Thompson Museum to the people of Workington in 1940. Here you will find pottery, glass, silver and furniture dating back to Georgian, Regency and Victorian times, together with the industrial and social history of coal mining, ship building and iron and steel making in Workington and it's surrounding area.
