Wigton
Wigton, which is a small market town that sits on the edge of the Lake District in Cumbria, received it's market charter in 1262. Access to this lively market town is from the A596 road to Workington and by way of the A595 road to Carlisle.

This town is an ancient settlement which evolved from a pre medieval street plan, which apparently can still be traced today.
However, it's architectural style is Georgian. This town, which is steeped in history was in existence by 1100AD. The Roman fort of Maglona, or Old Carlisle as it is locally known, is situated at the side of the A595 Carlisle to Cockermouth road. However, there is no stonework visible as it is completely covered with grass. Wigton, which has an abundance of historical sites and scenes, makes an excellent base for walking the Caldbeck Fells, popping up to Hadrian's Wall and Carlisle, or across to the beautiful Solway Coast.
