Details

The Lakes, Sawrey and Hawkshead is firmly linked with the name of Beatrix Potter, as it was in this scenic part of England that she wrote many of her children's books and where she spent the last thirty years of her life, having married a solicitor, William Heelis, in 1913.

When Beatrix Potter died in 1943 she left 4000 acres of land to The National Trust, as this was a cause close to her heart. This gift included 15 farms, cottages and many local areas of beauty which included Tarn Hows. This was her gift back to the land she loved and to help preserve it for future generations.

The World of Beatrix Potter Exhibition, which is in Bowness on Windermere, brings to life a magical indoor recreation of the Lakeland countryside, complete with sights, sounds and even smells. Here you can meet Peter Rabbit in Mr McGregor's garden, visit Mrs Tiggy-Winkle in her kitchen and discover Jemima Puddle-Duck in the woodland glade. Learn about Beatrix Potter herself and enjoy lunch or afternoon tea in the unique Tailor of Gloucester Tea Room, or outdoors on the garden terrace, where you can enjoy The Enchanting World of Beatrix Potter sculpture, which was unveiled in the presence of Renee Zellweger.
