The Dales Way footpath
The Dales Way, which is approximately an 84 mile walking route that passes through two National Parks, namely: the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Lake District National Park, can be completed in four days. However, the majority of walkers prefer to divide the route into sections of 10 to 15 miles per day with a rest day or two to enjoy the walk.
The highest point along this route, with an elevation of 488 metres, is Cam Houses. This route, which is mostly along river valleys, is shorter and less strenuous then the more well known routes such as the Pennine Way and the Coast to Coast Walk.
This walk can either begin in Ilkey in West Yorkshire and finish in Bowness on Windermere in the Lake District or vice a versa. From Ilkey the walker will pass through Wharfedale, Longstrothdale, over Oughtershaw Moss, down into Dentdale and the Lune Valley and then meet the Rivers Mint, Sprint and Kent before the descent into Bowness on Lake Windermere. However, as this route reaches the end at Bowness on Windermere the route connects with the Windermere Way, which is approximately a 45 mile circuit of Lake Windermere.
Planning an itinerary for this route should be easy as there are train stations at both ends of this route, and as this route is so popular with walkers there is a wide range of walking accommodation available.
Bowness on Windermere is the end of the Dalesway Walk which finishes off coming down Brant Fell, refreshments are within easy reach upon completion of the Dalesway Walk, with bars and coffee houses well within sight so they are not missed.
