Details

The Armitt Museum, which is in Ambleside in the Lakes, was initially founded by Mary Louisa Armitt, who in her will bequeathed resources to start a reference library and museum in Ambleside. All three of The Armitt Sisters, Sophia, Annie Marie and Mary Louisa devoted themselves to serving the local community, writing, teaching, lecturing and encouraging students.

The Armitt Museum and Library has a vast collection of art (which includes over 400 watercolours by Beatrix Potter illustrating fungi, fossils and Roman archaeology), archaeology, archives (many of these items relate to John Ruskin, Harriet Martineau and Charlotte Mason), books (this extensive collection includes work by local authors such as Arthur Ransome and Beatrix Potter), personal items (these include a lock of hair from John Ruskin, life mask of Harriet Martineau and Dorothy Wordsworth's scarf), geology, photography, local history, newspapers and parish magazines. It would be advisable to check the museum's website for their opening times.
