Details

The Abbot Hall Art Gallery, which is in Kendal, is in an immaculate Georgian building, and was opened on 28 September 1962 by HRH Princess Margaret who was accompanied by Lord Snowdon. It has since undergone further renovations and both the collections and the reputation of the exhibit programme has continued to grow. Downstairs you will find an impressive collection of 18th and 19th century paintings, together with period furniture, porcelain and glassware - this is laid out in such a way that it makes you feel as though you are walking around someone's stately home. However, upstairs is more of a traditional art gallery displaying work by Barbara Hepworth, John Piper, William Johnstone, Norman Adams and Elizabeth Frink.

There are, however, changing exhibitions each year, and these are certainly well worth looking out for.
