Swinside Stone Circle

Swinside Stone Circle, which is situated approximately five miles north of the town of Millom and to the west of Broughton-in-Furness, set in bleak morrland below the northern shoulder of Black Combe, is one of the finest circles in the Western Lakes. There were originally 60 stones in this 90 foot ring, all but five still remain, however, only 32 of these are still standing.

At the southern face of the site the portal stones appear to be aligned with the midwinter sun, when viewed from within the centre of the circle, where a long missing marker stone stood. This would suggest that, like many others, this circle could have possibly performed some sort of astronomical purpose.

This circle is located on private ground, however, it can easily be viewed from the Duddon Bridge to Corney Fell road which runs about a mile to the north.
