Steam Yacht Gondola
The original Steam Yacht Gondola was launched back in 1859. However, the present day Gondola, which was renovated by the National Trust and which still brings to life the splendour and luxury of the Victorian era, now burns logs made from wood waste. This will reduce approximately 95 tonnes of carbon each season, which represents approximately 10 per cent of the carbon emissions which was produced by Gondola when it was burning coal. To reduce the Gondola's carbon footprint even further, the wood waste ("blazer" logs) are made in North Wales, whereas previously the only suitable coal for the Gondola's boiler had to be imported from Russia and Poland.
This Gondola, which is part of the history and heritage of Coniston, offers it's passengers sumptuously upholstered saloons with spectacular views of the Coniston Fells as it glides along the lake. This graceful steam yacht works the lake every year between the months of April to October.
Gondola will now call at Monk Coniston Jetty, which is at the far northern tip of Coniston Water, every weekend in 2008. Please note, however, that all sailings are weather permitting and it would be advisable to telephone 01539441288 to check if the Gondola is sailing. This weekend timetable will enable passengers to combine a cruise on the Gondola with a gentle ramble to Tarn Hows by walking the newly opened access through the grounds of the Monk Coniston estate. Alternatively, a shorter trip on the Gondola combined with a short walk along the improved path which links Coniston village to the head of the lake is also possible.
