St Margarets Church (Wray Church)

St Margarets Church, or Wray Church as it is known locally and stands on the west shore of Lake Windermere and approximately two miles south of the village of Ambleside, was built in 1856 by James Dawson, a retired surgeon from Liverpool, who also built Wray Castle next door. This church was for "the spiritual benefit of his family, retainers, estate workers, servants and friends". This chapel was consecrated in 1861. In 1882 a young Beatrix Potter spent a holiday at Wray Castle, which was rented by her wealthy parents.

The Wray Castle estate was inherited by Dr Dawson's nephew, Preston Rawnsley, upon his death in 1875. Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, who was Preston's cousin, took up the appointment of vicar at Wray Church in 1877. The southwest glass stained window in Wray Church is known as the Children's Window, this records a tragedy at a time when there was no defence against infectious disease. The east window shows the Crucifixion. There is also a memorial to Dr James Dawson and his wife, Margaret.
