St Andrew's Church

St Andrews Church, which is in Coniston in the Lake District, was designed by J Matson and built in 1819. This replaced an earlier church which was built by William Le Fleming in 1586. In 1891 the low bays and the chancel were added. Charles Eamer Kempe created the beautiful stained glass for the Baptistery West window. However, many of the features of this church are due to the benefactors and patrons of Coniston, these include the Barratt family who in the 1820's developed the copper mines and the Le Fleming family, who in 1270 built Coniston Hall.

John Ruskin, who died at Brantwood of influenza on 20 January 1900, is buried in the churchyard of St Andrew's Church. His grave is marked with a large carved cross, which was designed by W G Collingwood, who was an expert on Anglo-Saxon crosses, and carved by H T Miles and made from green slate from the local quarry at Tilberthwaite. W G Collingwood, who also designed the war memorial - a Celtic Cross which is near the south porch, is also buried with his family in this churchyard.
