Rydal Mount
Rydal Mount is situated between Ambleside and Grasmere on the A591 in the Lakes. It was Wordsworth's home from 1813 until his death in 1850, however, his wife, Mary, continued to live here. Descendants of the family still own the property, which is open to the public, and has a good collection of family portraits and the poet's personal possessions.
The gardens, which were landscaped by William Wordsworth include the terrace and shelter where most of his later work was composed. The church, which the Wordsworths attended, is at the foot of the hill and just beyond it is Dora's Field, which Wordsworth bought with the idea of building a house on it. Unfortunately, this idea was not fulfilled and the field was given to his daughter. This field, which is carpeted with daffodils in spring, is now held by the National Trust.
