Ravenglass Roman Bath House (Walls Castle)
Ravenglass Roman Bath House, or Walls Castle as it is now known, is all that remains of the large Roman fort called Glannaventa. However, with walls over 12 feet high and approximately 40 feet by 90 feet, this is one of the largest surviving Roman structures in England which contains everything from cold baths to hot saunas. During the second century Ravenglass was an important naval base for the Romans.
This was a regional supply point for most of the north west. The Roman road over Hardknott Pass, called the Tenth Highway, linked their coastal fort at Ravenglass with their garrisons at Ambleside and Kendal. Ravenglass, which had a garrison of approximately one thousand soldiers, was occupied by the Romans for over three hundred years. English Heritage is responsible for the care of this property.
