Ravenglass

Ravenglass, which is a small coastal village located just off the A595 road in Cumbria, is the only coastal village within the Lake District National Park. This was an important naval base called Glannaventa for the Romans, which dates back to the 2nd century.

Ravenglass, which was occupied by the Romans for over 300 years, was a regional supply point for north western Roman Britain.

There was a Roman road from Ravenglass which went over Hardknott Pass to the Roman fort at Ambleside. Unfortunately, there are few Roman remains today, with the exception of Ravenglass Roman Bath House, which is known as Walls Castle. With an area of ninety feet by forty feet and walls up to twelve feet high, this is one of the largest remaining Roman structures in England and this is maintained by English Heritage. Ravenglass railway station, which is on the Cumbrian Coast railway line, is also a terminus for The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway which is a very popular tourist attraction.

About a mile south of Ravenglass is Muncaster Castle, a privately owned building built on foundations that date back to the Roman era.
