Moot Hall in Keswick

Moot Hall, which is on Market Square in Keswick in the Lake District, was built in 1813 using stone from the dilapidated house on Lords Island which is on Derwent Water and was home to the Earls of Derwent Water. The famous one handed clock, which dates back to 1610 and can be seen above the west end of the hall, is also thought to have come from the dilapidated house on Lord's Island.

This replaced the earlier 16th century court house, which apparently was the Receiving House where copper was stamped with the queen's mark in the reign of Elizabeth I. Moot Hall's ground floor was once used as a market and apparently it was also a prison. However, today it is used as the Keswick Tourist Information Centre on the ground floor with an art gallery above.
