Marshside Chapel
Marshside Chapel, which is situated in Kirkby in Furness in The Lake District, was established in 1870. However it is thought that the village's links with Methodism spans back more than a century previously. Apparently the founder of the Methodist tradition, John Wesley, may have been in the area in 1752. He certainly passed through this village in May 1759, when he was travelling up the Cumbrian Coast and crossing the Duddon Estuary to Millom.
The chapel, which was designed to seat approximately 200 - 250 members, would cost between £400 - £500. However, of this, £100 and the land was gifted by the Duke of Devonshire. Only Cumbrian materials were used for this building, this included sandstone from St Bees, which is further up the coast, and the slate for the walls and roof were moved, by the local farmers for nothing, from the quarry to the building site.
Over the next 20 years the chapel continued to grow. However, when the Millom Wesley Circuit was divided in 1892 from Ulverston, taking Kirkby with it, membership at Marshside had grown from 8 to 24 with a further 10 on probation.
However, the building work was not finished as in 1905 a school room was added to the chapel. A local MP, Victor Cavendish, who was from the family who owned the quarry, gave all the stone for free. This is a very interesting chapel which is steeped in history. For further in-depth information on this chapel please feel free to visit the official Kirkby in Furness Methodist Church website.
