Loweswater

Means the leafy lake, is approximately one and a quarter mile long, half a mile wide and around sixty feet deep. The leafy lake refers to the small forest of Holme Wood, which can be found on the south side of the lake. As this lake is so shallow it makes it another lake to freeze over early in winter.

The uniqueness of Loweswater is that it is the only lake whose waters flow in towards the centre of the Lake District, as well as having rolling hills surround it instead of rocky mountains. The beauty of Loweswater is that it is situated in the vale of Lorton, which is a very peaceful place and has remained uncommercialised with very few tourists. With Buttermere and Crummock Water just round the corner, you could walk all three of these lakes in one day.
