Lorton

High Lorton and Low Lorton lies between Cockermouth and Buttermere in the middle of the Vale of Lorton. The Vale of Lorton, which is a chain of valleys leading from Keswick towards Cockermouth, contains the lakes Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater.

From the southern end of the valley you can get to Keswick via the Honister Pass and Borrowdale. However, the route from Lorton via Whinlatter Pass takes you through Whinlatter Forest to Braithwaite near Keswick.

Behind the solid looking Yew Tree Hall, which was once part of Jennings Brewery, stands the Lorton Yew. This tree, which grows on the bank of Whit Beck, was the subject of William Wordsworth's poem "Yew-trees".

There is a Yew-tree, pride of Lorton Vale, Which to this day stands single, in the midst of

it's own darkness, as it stood of yore ....

Although many tourists pass through this beautiful Vale to Buttermere valley it remains relatively untouched by tourism. There are, however, many beautiful walks in this area which includes the spectacular waterfall at Spout Force.
