The Langdale Valley

Langdale Valley, which consists of Little Langdale and Great Langdale in the Lake District, offers breathtaking mountain views together with the tarns, waterfalls and gills. Great Langdale, which attracts large amounts of hikers, climbers, fell runners and other outdoor enthusiasts, is one of the busiest in the Lake District.

Above the valley's northwestern end are the peaks of the Langdale Pikes, which include Pike O'Stickle and Harrison Stickle. These pinnacles can be seen from the northern shores of Lake Windermere. Much of the head of the valley and it's farms are owned and cared for by the National Trust, who also owns the Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, a gathering spot for walkers.

Little Langdale, which is less accessible than Great Langdale, is separated by Lingmoor Fell from Great Langdale and is reached either via a narrow winding road that passes Blea Tarn, or from the Eskdale direction via Hardknott Pass and Wrynose Pass.

Little Langdale is a small hamlet of a few stone houses, post office and a village pub. The River Brathay flows down the middle of the valley. Even William Wordsworth appreciated the beauty and remoteness of this beautiful little valley.
